Full-time Research Services Manager

at Home Office in London/ Croydon/ Sheffield

At the Home Office we work on really important services. Things like getting or renewing a passport, getting permission to come to or stay in the UK, entering the country or returning to it.
User researchers tend to work within fast-paced delivery teams. They will mostly plan, recruit and conduct research in-house, and are responsible for including the full range of users who rely on government services in their work. You will provide an essential service to help us all deliver for the department.
You be passionate about what you bring to service delivery and prepared to work flexibly and creatively meet the changing demands of the team. You will be an organised and confident project manager with strong communication skills, and you will enjoy proactively tackling new challenges.
You will be self sustaining, confident with new technology or prepared to learn fast.
You will be comfortable with people and keen to learn more about digital ways of working. Most of all you will be sensitive to relationships and understand how to nurture and develop them.

The role
As a research services manager you will:
• Support digital delivery teams to build accessible digital services
• Build relationships with internal and external partners and deliver opportunities to access participants for user research
• Maximise existing Home Office networks and create networks of your own
• Plug into local geographical networks and understand how these support with users of Home Office services
• Recruit users through email campaigns using the Home Office email marketing tool
• Create online surveys to gather participants for user research
• Build and maintain research panels of willing participants for user research
• Facilitate shared knowledge of networks and relationships amongst the team
• Manage and support our internal research laboratory facilities
• Provide hosting services for research sessions
• Provide technical support for teams carrying out research and usability testing using the laboratories
• Support the procurement of external research laboratories and participant recruitment agencies
• Contribute to and maintain the User Research Repository – share and re-use valuable research assets where they can help other researchers across government

Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will:
• have experience in reaching diverse audiences
• have excellent relationship management skills
• be an excellent negotiator and able to influence at all levels
• be a skilled and organised project manager
• be self sustaining and able to work autonomously
• have experience within a digital delivery environment
• have experience of user research as part of digital delivery
• be able to write and communicate in a clear and simple way
• be able to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and changing deadlines
• have experience of designing and implementing surveys
• have a good understanding of data handling and data protection
• understand and be an advocate for users needs as part of good digital service design
