Full-time Junior Service Designer

at Home Office in London/ Croydon/ Sheffield

This is a chance to work on services that really matter. As a service designer at the Home Office you’ll work in a multidisciplinary team, alongside researchers, data scientists and developers to deliver good, user-centred public and behind-the-scenes services.
At the Home Office we work on really important services. Things like getting or renewing a passport, getting permission to come to or stay in the UK, entering the country or returning to it. We work on problems like how people prove who they are, know what they are entitled to or prove that they are eligible for something. We also design for behind-the-scenes: the things people delivering services need to be effective. We design with data and we also build platforms, registers and other building blocks of services.
You’ll be working with people who value user research and design and you’ll be creating work you’ll feel proud of.

Day to day you'll:
• work with a user researcher to understand the needs and behaviour of users
• look for where services or interactions don’t work well for users and identify where problems exist or complexity can be removed
• see how you might create simpler, clearer services
• communicate service concepts and ideas using methods that allow others to more easily understand all the different parts to a service
• look for commonalities in activities across services where opportunities might exist to improve them
• facilitate workshops to help draw out knowledge from people across government or third parties
• identify ways to measure services and opportunities to reduce costs
• create concepts and prototypes and iterate them to test out hypotheses
• contribute to service patterns and standards across government

Essential:
The ideal candidate will:
• have strong communication skills (verbal, written and visual)
• know a bit about how the internet works
• have a related degree, or relevant industry experience
• have knowledge about working in an agile environment and be able to work quickly
• be able to explain problems and ideas in a way that other people understand
• be able to sketch and prototype
• see how to reduce complexity in services
• welcome constructive criticism and be able to constructively review the work of others
• be able to connect dots, make inferences, do the hard work to make things simpler
• think about the broader context of a service

Please note we have opportunities in London/Croydon and Sheffield. To apply please follow this link http://bit.ly/277EYSs this role expires on midnight the 6th June 2016.
